The Pneumothorax or Sucking chest wound Treatment has changed
In previous years the treatment for this condition was to Phone the Ambulance 999 / 112 and sit the patient on the floor, cover wound with sterile dressing and seal three sides down, this allows the air to escape from the fourth side.
Now due to more research, expert opinion recommends that the first aider now
Phone the Ambulance 999 / 112
Sits the patient upright on the floor
Leave the wound open to fresh air if possible
Apply direct pressure to stop bleeding, But do not block the hole.
If the casualty becomes unconscious, place into recovery position injured side down and open airway check breathing and resuscitate if necessary.
Always remember to sent the First Aiders on the 3hr Annual refresher training session
Things do change, practice gives you confidence, 3 years is a long time to wait for your 2 day re-qualification course!
