Under the law employers are responsible to protect the health, safety, and welfare of their employees and people who may be affected by their business. In order to be compliant employers must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this.
This means that your workers are protected from anything that may cause harm, but at the same time controlling any risk or injury that may occur, in or around your business.
In the event of injury or sudden illness, failure to provide adequate first aid could result in a casualty’s death. Employers must ensure that significant risk is mitigated through appropriate levels of first aid compliance. HSE will prosecute in cases where a disregard for established standards or poor compliance with the law is proven.
Failure to be compliant with Health And Safety first aid regulations can result in:

•    Closure by the HSE (temporary or permanent)
•    Hefty fines
•    Litigation
•    Prosecution - including in extreme cases Corporate Manslaughter

The adequate and appropriate first aid requirement depends on the circumstances of the individual workplace.
