What to do in case you suspect an overdose?
Independent Medical Solutions believe that everyone should know how to react in case of any emergency, today's first aid advice we will advise how to help someone who may have consumed poison.
Poisonous chemicals are a growing risk, these chemicals can cause extreme internal damage or even death if action is not quickly taken. Hazardous chemicals can be found around the common household such as: Paint, bleach, cleaning fluid or prescription drugs.
There are also cases where illegal drugs and alcohol may be the cause of an overdose, the effects of poisoning for any substance depends on the amount swallowed.

Signs that someone may be suffering from an overdose?

  • Abnormal pupil size
  • Drowsiness
  • Delusions and paranoid behavior
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tremors
  • Unconsciousness
  • Cramping abdominal pain

Emergency first aid for a Corrosive Substance: 

  • Don't endanger yourself - make the area safe for you to help.
  • Dilute the substance or wash it away if possible.
  • Substances on the skin - wash away with water.
  • Swallowed substances - get the person to rinse out their mouth, then give frequent sips of milk or water.
  • Call 999 / 112 for emergency help.
  • Give information about the poison if possible and take advice from the ambulance operator.
  • If the person becomes unconscious - open the Airway and check for Breathing. Resuscitate if necessary using protective face shield or if non-available compression only CPR.
  • If the person is breathing, place into recovery position then call 999 / 112 

Emergency first aid for a non-Corrosive Substance 

  • Call 999 / 112 for emergency help.
  • Give information about the poison if possible and take advice from the ambulance operator. 
  • Give NIL by mouth.
  • If the person becomes unconscious - open the Airway and check for Breathing. Resuscitate if necessary using protective face shield or if non-available compression only CPR.
  • If the person is breathing, place into recovery position then call 999 / 112  

Emergency first aid for Inhalation of smoke, fumes or other substances:

  • Move the person into fresh air if possible.
  • If the person becomes unconscious - open the Airway and check for Breathing. Resuscitate if necessary using protective face shield or if non-available compression only CPR.
  • If the person is breathing, place into recovery position then call 999 / 112 for emergency help.
  • If the person is conscious and has difficulty in breathing, an upright position may help.
  • Check for and treat any burns.
  • Carefully monitor Airway and Breathing, the patient must always go to Hospital for a check-up or wait until help arrives.

Never risk your own safety in order to perform first aid.
